The basic training company I was assigned to had been given a weekend off and Joe kept dad company for the 2 hour trip there and back. I slept. I think he enjoyed being on the Army base for a couple hours. I was glad to see them both pull up and get me off that base for awhile.
Uncle Joe was always easy to be around, funny and willing to share his views on a variety of subjects.
I was happy to hang with him and Aunt Ann for several different events over the years.
I was lucky for him to be my uncle.

Joel Lee Brooks, 89, of Evansville, Indiana, passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, January 18, 2022.
Joel was born in Vanderburgh County, IN on July 13,1932, to the late Nathaddous and Betsy Jane (Parker) Brooks. He married Anna Lois Day on November 1, 1952, and they enjoyed 69 years together. Joel graduated from Evansville Central High School in 1950. He was a proud veteran of the Korean War serving as a Sergeant First Class in the Army and the owner of Brooks Sheet Metal in Bowling Green, Kentucky. He was college football fan and loved reading, watching westerns, playing chess, solving Soduku puzzles and listening to music, especially Country Music.
Joel is survived by children Bonnie Jane Brooks of Melbourne, Florida, Walter Bryan Brooks (Teresa) of Brentwood, Tennessee, Kevin James Brooks of Robards, Kentucky, Jennifer Brooks Mayo (Michael) of Jacksonville, Florida, and Thad Andrew Brooks of Evansville, Indiana as well as grandchildren Lauren Michelle Brooks, Chad Ashley Brooks, and Anna Patricia Mayo and many beloved nieces and nephews.
Joel was preceded in death by his parents, wife Anna, and siblings Christine Scott, Woodrow Brooks, and Florence Ferry.
Joel has requested no visitation and services will be private. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Joel’s memory to Korean War Veterans and Hospice.
